Then, the shotacon aspects: Ciel is 12 years old, and is shown in situations that can only be defined “fan service”. As a saving grace, the director, Shinohara Toshiya (篠原 俊哉) has a good track record of action anime: four Inuyasha movies, and most of Gunparade Orchestra.
Oh, I know it’s not exactly the main point of the show, but I’m a bit tired of fights as plot devices a friend of mine once asked to see a good series with no fighting or superpowers, and it took me a while to find one.
? The author, Iwasaki Taku (岩崎 琢), has quite the track record: Angel Heart, Gurren Lagan, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, Read or Die, Soul Eater.Īlso, the two main characters are good looking, and Ciel is shown naked pretty often. The music is great, so much so that having the opening theme as the background tune for the DVD’s menus makes them bearable. The drawings are gorgeous, and Victorian London a meticulously represented. On the “pro” side of the scale, we have demons and various supernatural entities, secrets, mysteries, and a general Gothic feeling. The Phantomhive family secretly works “dirty jobs” for the Queen, so Ciel gets entangled in plots and mysteries, managing to solve them with the aid of Sebastian. The demon, Sebastian Michaelis, passing as a butler, can solve practically every problem, is a hell of a fighter, and is bound to Ciel until vengeance has been exacted. But, since this is not Gotham City but London in the late 19th century, he makes a contract with a demon to seek vengeance. The main character, Ciel Phantomhive, had his noble, wealthy parents murdered, and was left heir of the family name, title, and fortune. There should be enough for everyone, right?… Dignified demonic butler, shotacon-bait main character, Gothic atmospheres, Victorian London.
